There have been many fantastic Cox Plate winners over the years – it is the race of champions after all – and the past decade has seen some exciting Cox Plate runs. Read on for our video retrospective of the best Cox Plate winners of the last ten years.
2009 Cox Plate Winner – So You Think

The favourite in the odds at Luxbet for the 2010 Cox Plate was also the 2009 Cox Plate winner, finishing in style 2 and a half lengths ahead. While he had difficulty in his previous start in the Caulfield Guineas, finishing fifth, So You Think proved that he was champion quality with his Cox Plate run.
2008 Cox Plate Winner – Maldivian

What was most impressive about 2008 Cox Plate winner Maldivian was how he fought for the front early on and managed to maintain that dominance all the way through the run. It was a result that could hardly have been expected after a season where Maldivian seemed to be going worse with each race, and it was his first win in over a year and 10 races.
2007 Cox Plate Winner – El Segundo

Again, El Segundo is a Cox Plate winner that had disappointed in his last start, just after gaining the faith of punters with a victory in his previous race. It just didn’t seem to matter in the end, though, as El Segundo easily picked up the pace in the last 200 metres of the 2007 Cox Plate to come out on top.
2006 Cox Plate Winner – Fields of Omagh

Before El Segundo won a Cox Plate, he was first pipped at the finish line by Fields of Omagh, the 2006 Cox Plate winner (and also the 2003 Cox Plate winner, though less impressively). Fields of Omagh had looked to be losing his winning form before this run, and he was retired after the 2006 Cox Plate in a fitting finish to a champion’s career.
2005 Cox Plate Winner – Makybe Diva

In the same year as her final Melbourne Cup victory, Makybe Diva also managed to pick up her first Cox Plate win. Considering her two Melbourne Cup wins before this race, it is hard to decide whether this Cox Plate win or the third Melbourne Cup win in-a-row was Makybe Diva’s greatest achievement during this season.
2004 Cox Plate Winner – Savabeel

The 2004 Cox Plate winner Savabeel had just one win coming into the race – his last start in the Spring Champion Stakes. It was all he needed to win the Cox Plate, and apparently two wins was all he needed in his career. After some disastrous performances early in 2005, Savabeel was retired after finishing eighth in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
2001 Cox Plate Winner – Northerly

Northerly went on to win another Cox Plate run the next year, but his most legendary run was beating the two-time Cox Plate winner Sunline in her attempt at a third win. It was a valiant run ahead of the champion, who had lead for almost the entire race, but Northerly proved he deserved the win with his continued career and Cox Plate win in 2002.
