The Lloyd Williams-owned Zipping has burst into contention for the 2010 Cox Plate following the evergreen nine-year-olds’ courageous win in the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Sunday.
Danehill gelding Zipping has shortened into $12 from $31 to win the $3 million Cox Plate on October 23 at Moonee Valley after holding on to defeat a star studded field in the 2010 Turnbull Stakes.
On Sunday Zipping ($17) stormed home to defeat reigning Melbourne Cup winner Shocking ($5.50) by a long head with Shoot Out ($3.70F) in third.
The quality of the field Zipping defeated saw bookies across the country slash their prices on Zipping to become just the second nine-year-old in history to win the Cox Plate following Fields Of Omagh in 2006.
Zipping has twice placed third in the esteemed weight-for-age feature, finishing behind So You Think last year and Maldivian in 2008.
Jockey Nick Williams is Zipping’s regular rider, aboard for the runner’s maiden Group 1 win in the Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington back in March, and will be aboard the veteran again in the Cox Plate field this year.
Following the reshuffle of the Cox Plate odds at Sportsbet, So You Think remains the hot favourite at $2.50 but More Joyous has drifted out to $7 from $5.50 as Whobegotyou has shortened into the $6 second favourite.
Other big movers in the Cox Plate betting were Metal Bender in from $21 to $11 after a gallant fourth place finish to Zipping in the Turnbull, Turnbull Stakes runner-up Shocking slashed from $21 into $13 and Gai Waterhouse’s Herculian Prince now at $34 cut from $101 following their impressive win in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday.
The 2010 Cox Plate third declarations are out tomorrow, narrowing down the list of horses heading towards the spring feature.
